Brighten Your Complexion: What's Love Got To Do With It!
It’s a fact! When you’re in love, it shows—all over your face. And we’re not just talking about that goofy grin love brings out in pretty much all of us. Research shows that a happy, healthy relationship can literally brighten your complexion. Here are four research-backed reasons to share the love for a brighter complexion.
You get a lift in your natural glow.
Oxytocin—aka the love hormone—is produced by the body during physical contact, like cuddling and sex. Why is this good news for your skin? Because oxytocin has been shown to have many youth-supporting benefits, including increasing blood circulation for a brighter and glowing complexion. Plus, one 2019 study found that increased levels of the hormone may diminish the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.
You may get fewer stress breakouts.
Oxytocin has another benefit: It’s been shown to help decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. Higher levels of cortisol can amp up inflammation and have been linked to several skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, and acne.
You may be less susceptible to high blood pressure.
Researchers at the State University of New York at Oswego found that when couples spent time together it lowered their blood pressure more than when they spent time with someone who wasn’t their partner. So what does this have to do with your skin? High blood pressure has been linked to the more noticeable appearance of wrinkles (especially along the forehead) so the lower your BP, the better.
You’re more likely to look as young as you feel.
Sex causes a surge in the production of a hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). And DHEA just happens to be known as the “anti-aging hormone.” Numerous studies have shown it can slow the effects of aging on the body and skin. Just one more reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day (and every day) with your favorite cuddler!
