What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Sep 24th 2021

Hyaluronic Acid. You hear it on TV, from your aesthetician or dermatologist, and especially see it on your skin care products. And there’s a reason it’s an important addition to your daily skin care regimen. That's because hyaluronic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the skin, binds to water to plump up your skin and give it that dewy, glowy effect.

Hyaluronic acid increases hydration in the skin, which can keep your skin looking fresh, full, and bouncy. "The collagen in our dermis forms the structure of the skin," explains board-certified dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse."Natural hyaluronic acid is bound to collagen on one side and links to water molecules on the other, giving skin its plumpness."

Hyaluronic exists naturally in our bodies, it’s present in the “goo” like fluid found in our joints, cartilage and eyeballs, making sure they all keep well lubricated. It’s also found in the space between our skin cells, and it’s a really important contributor to maintaining our skin’s moisture levels, which subsequently has a profound effect on our skin’s barrier function. It’s like a natural humectant that attracts water from the atmosphere and helps the skin retain it.

However, as you know, we produce much less of it as we age. That’s why common signs of aging include the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, creaky, stiff joints and skin that looks dull and shapeless.

We knew the power that hyaluronic acid could have on estrogen-depleted skin, which is why it’s present in so many of our products. Consider it an honorary member of the SeeMe Complex!
