Let’s talk acids.
When you’re building a skincare routine, you already know you need, at least, a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen. Check. Check. Check. But adding certain acids to your regimen can help you achieve fresher, clearer, better hydrated skin. The two most important acids everyone’s talking about? Salicylic and hyaluronic acid. Here, we’ll help you understand why you’ll want them working for you.
Salicylic Acid
What it is: As one of the beta hydroxy acid family, it’s an oil-soluble acid that can powerfully penetrate the skin’s surface layers.
What it does: Salicylic acid is a potent anti-inflammatory that works its way deep into pores to dissolve oils that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. It’s also a terrific exfoliant, sloughing off dead skin cells that can dull your complexion.
Who needs it: If you’re prone to breakouts (whiteheads and blackheads), salicylic acid can be your new best friend. But keep in mind that it’s not good for treating cystic acne and could be more irritating than helpful if you have sensitive skin.
Hyaluronic Acid
What it is: Our skin cells naturally produce this acid, one of the key molecules involved in skin moisture, according to research.
What it does: Hyaluronic acid holds about a thousand times its weight in water, which helps your skin retain moisture and improves elasticity, both of which can enhance a healthy glow. Skincare products containing the acid (like the SeeMe Beauty Smooth Out Recovery Serum and the Sweet Dreams Night Cream) help keep your complexion looking flush and fresh.
Who needs it: Everyone! Seriously. Especially those of us with mature skin. The amount of hyaluronic acid naturally occurring in our body decreases with age, so adding the ingredient to your skincare regimen can help give you just the dewy boost you need.
