Think Again: You might be over-cleansing without even knowing it
It’s a task most of us do without thinking twice, but here are four reasons to rethink your face washing routine
Your skin type has changed
Even if you never had dry or sensitive skin, it may feel that way now. That’s because peri-menopause and menopause trigger a host of dehydrating skin issues. “There’s an increase in trans epidermal water loss, which means you’re constantly losing moisture in the top layers of the skin,” says NYC-based dermatologist Ellen Marmur MD*. “And declining estrogen levels cause a reduction in both sebum production and moisturizing hyaluronic acid in the skin.”
Natural oil is actually a good thing
“Squeaky clean is not the goal,” says Marmur. “You want to clean your face gently, without stripping precious oils and lipids. This goes for skin at any age, but especially when your body is producing less of these important skin-saving factors.”
You may be scrubbing too hard
The natural turnover rate of our skin cells slows down as estrogen levels in our skin drop, which can leave our skin feeling a bit dull at times. We want to boost our body’s natural cell turnover rate to reveal those healthy new skin cells. Some cleansers use physical exfoliants to help remove those old skin cells, and scrubbing too hard with harsh abrasives can actually cause more damage than good. Our exfoliating cleanser uses gentle levels of time tested ingredients to boost exfoliation and reveal those new healthy skin cells without all of the scrubbing.
You’re not moisturizing as you cleanse
Cleansing away dirt and makeup and gently exfoliating away those old skin cells leaves your skin clean, fresh, and ready for our Smooth Out Recovery Serum which contains moisturizing hyaluronic acid to complement your body’s own. The Serum holds onto that precious moisture, pulling it close to your skin, and then our Call Me Hydra-Cream or our Sweet Dreams Night Cream helps to seal in that moisture to keep it nourishing your skin over time.
